The first step is to download the Gimp. It is free to download and install. As always, you can watch the tutorial video or just follow the steps below.
Installing the Gimp requires two different files that are compressed to be downloaded. You can also download the help files and the animation package if desired.
1) Go to www.gimp.org
2) Choose your version. In this case, we will set it up for Windows. This is located on the left side menu about half way down.

3) Then from the next menu, choose automated installer.

Also on that screen is the system requirements, you might to double check that you can actually run GIMP.
4) At this point, you'll see this screen. Click on stable version from the menu on the upper right.
5) Now here are the files you'll need. The first 2 files you must install, the last 2 are optional, but a good idea to install.

GTK+ 2 for Windows (version 2.6.9). - REQUIRED
Click on download under the HTTP to download this one first.
-
The Gimp for Windows (version 2.2.9). - REQUIRED
Click on download under the HTTP to download this one first.
- GIMP Help 2 (version 0.9) - optional
- GIMP Animation Package (version 2.2.0) - optional
6) Pick a download mirror (the closer the better). And then make sure to save these files to your desktop.

For windows XP, click on the bar that appears at the top and then choose Download File... as shown below:

7) When the download dialog box comes up, hit Save.

Another Dialog box pops up, click on your Desktop then click Save as shown below.

8) This will now save the file to your Desktop. After that file saves, close the download box and repeat the process for the other files. You will need at least the 2 required files for the GIMP to run correctly.
You can go back by hitting back on your browser or clicking this link.
