Making an Educational Software Purchase

There are many important considerations in purchasing educational software. These factors are only guidelines, but will help you realize the influence of different factors to your choices.

These are not placed in a distinct order, but be sure you think about your responses carefully before buying any educational software. Your enjoyment and success will profit from any research done before you make your purchase.

  • In the market for software programs by name or by topic? If you know what software you're looking for, then you've likely already done some of the work. But, if you only know you want a software program to learn to speak Spanish, then take your time examining the options available.
  • Will the user be interested? Discover software that is self-paced and might feature a favorite interactive story or cartoon character.
  • User's age: Will your toddler or high school student be using the software? You'll want the software to be appropriate for the age of the user. Maybe Sponge Bob can teach your children typing skills, but you probably want a more adult learn to type software program!
  • Cost: Have you found the best price for the product? You can search other sites to get an idea of prices and also shipping costs. Also look for features such as discounted shipping and states with no sales tax.
  • Computer System Requirements: Will the software run on your personal computer? Any good educational software website will tell you the requirements your computer must have in order to run the program efficiently. Always look over this part carefully.
  • Is it suitable the learning style of the user? Does the child learn better by playing adventure games or taking quizzes or solving puzzles? Search for programs that feature these styles.
  • Returns/Exchanges: Will the company accept product returns? How difficult is it to send back a product? If the educational software you bought does not fit your needs or doesn't load on your computer, you want to exchange your program for one that better suits you.
  • Availability: If possible, verify that the software is in stock now. Review your shipping options. Are you able to download the product immediately?

Reviewing these important factors will make certain that you and your family will make the decision that will optimize the learning experience and the usability of your product.
